Dermal Fillers

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel like substances which are injected beneath the skins surface to fill out wrinkles and to increase volume and definition of the lips and cheeks.

They are composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance which occurs naturally in the body.  This substance attracts and binds water helping to keep the skin plump and hydrated but unfortunately we produce less and less of this hyaluronic acid as we age.

Are Dermal Fillers safe?

As they are based on natural products, they are indeed safe and have been used in the facial aesthetic industry for over 20 years with an excellent safety record.

How do Dermal Fillers work?

As we age, our facial bones change shape and our skin and soft tissue start to migrate downwards leading to the formation of deep lines and folds.  This loss in volume and the formation of deep folds can add years to your appearance.

By placing Dermal Fillers in specific areas, the hyaluronic acid draws water into the area, instantly plumping the area, thereby achieving a youthful look.

What are Dermal Fillers used for?

  • Nasolabial lines (nose to mouth lines)
  • Marionette lines (folds at the corner of the mouth)
  • Smoker’s lines (fine vertical lines on the upper lip)
  • To define the lips and if required, to increase the size of the lip
  • Cheek volumisation

How long will results last?

Results can typically last for 6-12 months depending on where the product is injected and other factors such as lifestyle and age.

Cheek volumisation can last up to 12-18months.

How long does Dermal Filler treatment take and what is involved?

It usually takes around 30 minutes.  Most of the Dermal Fillers we use contain a local anaesthetic but we may wish to use local anaesthetic before injecting  (similar to a dental injection)  to increase your comfort.

Softening of deep lines and volumisation is noticeable immediately but results will gradually improve over 2 weeks as the hyaluronic acid attracts and binds more water in the area.

What are the side effects of Dermal Filler treatment?

Common side effects are bruising, redness and swelling in the area.  As with Botox treatment, please avoid taking anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin 48 hours before treatment.

You may also feel lumpiness under the skin which will resolve.

The product will be broken down naturally over time, returning your facial tissues to their original appearance.
